“Fat Pig”

Val and I went to see our friend Karen in the Box Car Theater production of Neil LaBute’s “Fat Pig“, in San Francisco. The show is described as:

“[A] beautiful, sharp, and poignant comedic drama digs deep into our soul, questions our preconceived notions about love and the worthiness of people different from ourselves, specifically in this show, people of different shapes and sizes.”

It was an excellent production, and amusing because Karen played Carter, a part usually played by a man. She played the part as a butch dyke, adding another dimension to the complex relationships in this play. It is an emotional play, and well played. We got to meet the other cast members afterwards, and Val got all of their autographs on our program.

Beforehand we just did a web search for restaurants nearby and ended up at the Burmese Kitchen on Larkin. Yummy!

Travel to Wisconsin

I went to visit two of our customers, Sentry Insurance and Jeweler’s Mutual Insurance, in Wisconsin November 6-8. I went to Steven’s Point and Appleton, respectively.  I traveled with my colleagues Arjun and Ken, who were excellent travel companions, and good colleagues to have a long due to their knowledge of the insurance industry and these particular customers. It was a tiring trip, with short connections in Chicago both ways, but a nice time. And decent weather!

Haley at the House of Air

On November 4th, Haley went to the House of Air, a trampoline place, with the other 7th graders from the Temple. She had a blast!

Halloween!!

The girls finished their costumes over the weekend, so they were ready to go. Haley was a “Weeping Angel” from Dr. Who, and Katelyn was the March Hare. I dressed as a Silly Sorceress. Val didn’t dress up this year. Check out our costumes.

On Halloween morning they were up by 6:30 to get ready. After makeup and nail angst I got Haley to school on time, and came back for Katelyn. She had to fill a whole gallon thermos with boiling water and package up some tea bags and cups (after a stop at the store), to take to school for a tea party, then off we went.

I went to work, one of about 25 people on my floor to dress up. I’d been coordinating events at work, decorating a bit (my colleague Glenda did a lot of it) and organizing a potluck and costume contest. I was the emcee, and it was great fun. You can see pictures from the party here.

I left work early and picked up both kids, then tried to get some work done. At 5 I took Haley over to her friend Ari’s house in Burlingame. Haley’s parents took the two of them plus Ari’s little sister out in their neighborhood, and they had a great time. Meanwhile, I dropped Katelyn off to meet her friends near downtown Millbrae, and they went off on their own, after which I went back to pick up Haley. An hour or so later I took Val to the airport for a business trip to Arizona, and then picked up Katelyn. Basically I just shuttled everyone around all evening, and we all had fun.

Oh, and we’d carved pumpkins on Sunday, which you can see here. My friend Sabine helped, and Katelyn wasn’t able to do a pumpkin because she was busy doing homework. Sad!

Legacy Study Kicks Off

Haley and I are participating in a 5-year cancer study, called the Legacy Girls Study. We had our first interview on 10/30, where they asked lots of questions, took body measurements, a blood test, and a urine test from her, and saliva from me for a DNA test. We will be doing this every 6 months for 5 years. It’s cool to be part of this important work.

Lunch with Freda

I had a nice lunch with Francesca on 10/29, stealing a quick meal at a new Chinese place in San Mateo. Nice to keep this connection going on a regular basis!

Sabine Visits

Sabine, my dear friend from junior high and high school, who now lives in England, was visiting California, and stopped in for a visit for the day and overnight. She carved pumpkins with us; this one is hers:

(see the others here)

She got to see family angst and was very supportive. Then she and Val and I went to a nice sushi dinner, and we talked as late as we could and still have her be coherent for her 7am, flight to Washington State.

Sabine is another one of those friends that I just “click” with, who I can see only occasionally and then just pick up where we left off. What a treasure.

Visit with Stacy

I had a wonderful brunch at Lily’s Creperie with Stacy on Saturday the 27th. Neither of us had eaten crepes there, although I’d seen it on one of our frequent visits to the nearby Rainbow Pizza. I’d had sorbet from there once, and it was good. Anyway, the food turned out to be tasty, and Stacy and I had a really nice visit. Stacy is one of those people that I can not see for a while, and when we get together we just talk and talk and really click. I remember the first time we sat and talked, right after we met when I hired her to help me with two Passover Seders in 2001. I needed assistance because I’d just had knee surgery, not to mention I had two young children amd did two Seders in two days. (What was I thinking?) After the first Seder she and I sat on my deck and talked for hours. It’s great to have friends like that.

Visit with George and Linda

George and Linda visited us on Friday. Val and I cooked a relatively simple dinner, before which we lit Shabbat candles and ate challah I’d purchased earlier at the day when I went to the gym at the PJCC. After dinner we ate the dessert they brought and watched one of George’s favorite movies, Sans Soleil. The kids were with Glynis & Susan so we had some adult time.

Sholom Women Member Appreciation Dinner

I attended the Member Appreciation Dinner for Sholom Women on Thursday the 25th. Originally there was a guest speaker planned but she had to cancel at the last minute because her father took ill. So we just spent two hours socializing and it was delightful. I met two other women named Marilyn! The funniest part was that a big part of the conversation centered around baseball (I had the real-time app on my phone, giving others updates on the World Series game) and football (most of us are 49ers fans); breaking stereotypes, eh? Oh, and we talked about our jobs and our kids too.
