Katelyn – IOP
Katelyn started the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at Mills Hospital on 4/3. She goes every day from 3:30-6:15. This continues until she’s ready to graduate, anywhere from 6-16 weeks. The number of days per week gradually tapers off.
Jazz Band Concert
Katelyn was able to participate in the Aragon Invitational Jazz Concert on Wednesday, 3/27. It was a great way to get back into regular life after her hospital stay. Pictures here.
Katelyn’s Problems
On 3/21 Katelyn started a 5-day stay in the adolescent psych ward at Mills Hospital. More details upon request, but she’s suffering from depression and some psychosis.
Mills Open House/Jazz Band Performance
On 3/14, Haley and I went to the Mills Open House. I mostly wanted to talk to Katelyn’s English teacher, Ms. Price (a sweet woman, who really loves having Katelyn i her class), and to see Katelyn perform with the Jazz Band. Haley went with me because she wanted to see what Mills was like. Already looking towards high school!
President’s Day Weekend – Full of Activities!!
We all had full and fun activities over the weekend, with the family scattered far and wide.
Haley went with Glynis & Susan to Susan’s yearly family gathering. This time it was at Angel’s Camp, where they had fun playing Chopped and frolicking in the snow.
Katelyn went to Disneyland with the Mills band. She had a great time, until she came down with some kind of nasty stomach bug in the wee hours of Monday morning, just before they came home. At least she got to enjoy the weekend. Kathie went too, as a chaperone.
Val and I stayed home and had a visit from Jane, Val’s birth mother. We did all kinds of fun activities. On Friday, they hung out while I went to the Exiles meeting. On Saturday, Val and I went to the rabbi’s daughter, Ellie’s, Bat Mitzvah at PTS. Then the two of them took off for dim sum in SF and a visit to Muir Woods. I met up with them for a lovely birthday dinner at Revival in Berkeley since Val’s birthday had been on Thursday, and Jane’s was the following Thursday. On Saturday we hit the California Academy of Sciences’ members-only hours, and got to see the Rainforest and Earthquake exhibits before they got too crowded. We saw the penguin feeding, Claude the albino alligator, and lots more. After catching the beautiful views from Twin Peaks, they dropped me at BART so I could head back south and spend some quality time with my friend Rio, while they continuing prowling around SF. Jane left that evening. Val and I had a relaxing Monday, ending with dinner at Piperade in SF with George and Linda, continuing the celebration of Val’s birthday.
Except for Katelyn’s getting sick (which continued most of the week), it was a wonderful time.
Katelyn’s Driving Lessons
The first of 3 lessons was 1/22, the secon was 2/12, and the third is scheduled for 3/5. At the second lesson the instructor took her on the freeway. We knew this would happen so I asked her about it. She said yes, they drove on the freeway, and stopped for a popcicle at a fun place. I asked her where it was, and she said San Jose!! I was astounded that the instructor took her that far on the freeway! I guess I’ll have to give it a try with her soon…
Pep Band at Basketball
Katelyn played with the Mills pep band at several basketball games over the last couple of months. It’s a long evening, with both the girls’ and boys’ games, but the kids have a great time. You can see her playing here; look at the top of the picture, in the middle.
Havdalah with the Rabbi
Val and Katelyn (because Haley and I were off at the swim meet) went to a Havdalah celebration at Rabbi Mark’s house (from B’nai Emunah) on 1/12.
Katelyn got her driving permit!
Katelyn passed her permit test on the first try on 12/28! We got there a few minutes before her 2:00 appointment, and were told she needed her certificate of completion for her drivers ed class (duh, of course) and identification, like a birth certificate or passport. OOPS! Luckily the woman at the desk gave us a grace period so we rushed home (something wrong about speeding to get to a drivers permit test) and got those things and got back at 2:20. We only had to wait about 15 minutes before being called to the window, then a bit of time waiting for picture-taking and thumb-printing, then Katelyn went off to take her test. It took about 20 minutes. She missed 4; she could have missed up to 8 and still passed so that was great.
First we stopped for a gas-pumping lesson, then we went over to Skyline college, to the empty parking lots, for her first lesson. She did great, driving around, practicing stopping, accelerating, turning, signaling, and even parking. We left (with me driving), picked up Haley, and went out for celebratory sushi.
Yay!
Christmas
The kids were here on Christmas Eve – we just ordered in Chinese and watched movies. On Christmas morning I usually go to Kathie’s. She was sweet and brough the kids’ gifts over so we could open them here and I wouldn’t have to travel. Pictures here.
