Trivia Bee
The kids went to the Trivia Bee again this year, with Glynis & Susan, on the 12th. Haley was so excited because they had a raffle and she won a fruit “boat”, with a banana hook.
Haley’s Birthday – The Party Continues
As if driver education and a concert weren’t enough to keep up busy on Saturday, Haley’s birthday party with her friends took place in the afternoon. Val and Haley did all the setup because I was away at the concert. The kids has a great time running around in the yard mostly playing the in-person version of their favorite online game, Minecraft. They played pinball, Twister, chess, and played on the Wii, and had cake and ice cream to top off the nutritious snacks they munched on all afternoon. A good time was had by all.
Band Concert
I played tuba with the West Bay Community Band at a concert at the Redwood City Portfest celebration (75th anniversary) on Saturday. Great fun!
Driver Education!
Katelyn had her first Driver Education class on Saturday the 6th. Three more sessions to go. She said it was one of the most boring and tedious experiences she’s ever had. Apparently of the 11 teenagers in the class, 4 fell asleep.
Mills Mania
The kids went to “Mills Mania” on Friday. This a carnival/dinner/movie event at the high school, a benefit for the Mills Annual Fund. The thing that was particularly remarkable about it is that they were both there unsupervised, with strict orders to not leave campus without each other. They did great, and had a wonderful time. They’d even planned on walking home together afterwards because Val and I were teaching a class, but ended up getting a ride from our friend and neighbor, Lynn.
Another shot in my thumb
I’m still dealing with the effects of my fall/broken thumb last February. I got a steroid shot in my thumb 4 weeks ago, and had it repeated on Thursday. We’re hoping to keep the tendon swelling down, to avoid surgery. Grrr.
Read-Ended
Got read-ended in stop-and-go traffic on my way to work on Tuesday. No injuries. The rear bumper on my car needs replacing and the trunk has some dents, but everything is workable for now. I’ll take it to the body shop next week.
I felt really sorry for the other driver. She was 18 years old, was driving her parents’ car, and had just gotten her license two months prior.
Amazing Party
My birthday party was an overwhelming success. Check out the pictures!
Joanie, Kathie, and Andrea showed up at 10:30 to start, and worked their butts off until the party at 2, setting up tables, awnings, food, drinks, our wine tasting station, flowers, and so much more.
The party was scheduled to start at 2, but the first guests didn’t start arriving until about 2:30. People came in a steady stream, peaking at around 4:30, the advertised time for cake.
We had a wine tasting station for checking out various wines we’d received as gifts. We had a “Make a Memory for Marilyn” station where people made cute signs with markers and stickers, to be included in a memory book. Many visits were made to the lookout at the top of the hill. People seemed to really have a good time, and I got to socialize with everyone. The kids all hung out together in the living room, where Val’s Solar Fire pinball machine was a big hit. Throughout the party Joanie, Kathie, and Andrea continued to work, keeping everything tidy, replenishing snacks, cooking burgers, and everything else.
The cake was awesome. The company was awesome. The food was awesome. The weather was awesome. The whole party was awesome.
The last guests left around 7, except for a handful who stayed for a more “adult” after-party. That went on until the wee hours, and was also a great success.
I can’t think of a better way to kick off the next decade. Thanks to all of my friends and family who shared it with me, and of course to Val who planned it, and Joanie who made it into a party.
Sneaky Decorating
On Thursday Val started talking about perhaps going out to dinner tonight, just the two of us. It was uncharacteristic of her to do logistics like that a day in advance, but I just thought it was sweet. We had a lovely sushi dinner and came home to a house that had been stealthily decorated by Kathie and Joanie. It says “Happy 50” all over my house, complete with streamers and banners and even a bit of glitter. A lovely way to start my special day, a bit early.
We had dinner at the same place we went on our first date, over 11 years ago. Romantic, eh?
