Thanksgiving!
We had a fabulous time! Here’s who attended:
- Susan (who helped with some prep and a ton of cleanup)
- Joel
- Apple (who brought a from-a-real-pumpkin pie)
- Nathan
- Glynis (who made an apple torte, with help from Susan and Katelyn)
- Susan (who made veggie pockets, with help from Glynis and Katelyn)
- Jennifer (who made the gravy)
- Selena (who made a gingerbread)
- Mom (who made the vegan stuffing and help with LOTS of shopping, setup, cleaning, and tons of dishes, in addition to an endless supply of ideas and moral support)
And of course me, Val (who made cranberry sauce and bread sauce and helped a lot, in spite of her back being all messed up), Katelyn (who lugged things around, prepped brusells sprouts, and help with cleanup and dishes), and Haley (who preppedĀ brussells sprout and green beans, and helped with all kinds of setup and cleanup and dishes).
It was a small enough crowd that we could actually have one table conversation and sit at one table, and everyone seemed to get along well. Games were played (pinball, Jenga, chess, etc), we watched some football, and Joel and Nathan played the piano a bit.
Pictures here. Apparently only one side of the table got photographed. I think Val is the only one who didn’t appear in any pictures. She was there! š
Thanksgiving Prep and More
I took Wednesday 11/21 off work – too much to do!
- Gym: appointment with my trainer
- Mammogram
- Costco
- Pick up Haley
- Mollie Stone’s
- Wash all of the holiday dishes
- Cooking and prepping for Thanskgiving
I was exhausted!
Kathie’s Imminent Retirement
Afetr 36 years with SamTrans, Kathie is finally being serious about retiring. I went with her on 11/19 to the PERS (Public Employees’ Retirement System) office in San Jose to discuss details. Looks like it will be May 1.
Time with Deborah
I spent a lovely evening with my friend Deborah on 11/18. We’ve been friends for over 20 years. Amazing!
Katelyn: CMEA Jazz Festival
Katelyn spent the day at the College of San Mateo on 11/16 with the Mills jazz band, at a CMEA (California Music Educators Association) jazz festival. They had a great time, although missed another day of school.
Katelyn goes to the Opera
Katelyn, along with many of the music students from Mills, went to a dress rehearsal of the SF Opera’s production of Tosca on 11/14. Katelyn really enjoyed it, although getting home late meant she didn’t get any homework done that night. It was the beginning of a long weekend of little sleep and lots of make-up work.
Veteran’s Day Parade Judging
As I do just about every year, I judged the Veteran’s Day Parade in San Francisco on 11/11. It was a small parade. Some larger parades have been as many as up to 300 units. In recent years it’s been more like 130. This year there were just under 90 units. As I have been for over 20 years, I judged with Tami and Jenny, who are great colleagues in this. I love judging parades, so am thinking of seeking out more gigs like this.
Jennfier & Selena Visit
Jennifer & Selena visited for one of our regularĀ game-and-socializing evenings on 11/10. We love hanging out with them!
Bar/Bat Mitzvah Season
Haley’s classmates are all become Bar/Bat Mitzvahs this year, so the season has begun. In preparation for her own next September, she must attend at least 10 of them. We started off well, attending Sara’s on 11/10 and Shoshana’s on 11/17. In the evening after Shoshana’s there was a party at the Aquarium of the Bay at Pier 39 in San Fransciso. I didn’t go, but instead chose to send Haley on the bus they chartered to and from the synagogue. She didn’t get home until 11:30, and was all hyped up. Needless to say she was tired the next day, and didn’t go to religious school. I’d be surprised if many of her classmates made it to school that day.
“Fat Pig”
Val and I went to see our friend Karen in the Box Car Theater production of Neil LaBute’s “Fat Pig“, in San Francisco. The show is described as:
“[A] beautiful, sharp, and poignant comedic drama digs deep into our soul, questions our preconceived notions about love and the worthiness of people different from ourselves, specifically in this show, people of different shapes and sizes.”
It was an excellent production, and amusing because Karen played Carter, a part usually played by a man. She played the part as a butch dyke, adding another dimension to the complex relationships in this play. It is an emotional play, and well played. We got to meet the other cast members afterwards, and Val got all of their autographs on our program.
Beforehand we just did a web search for restaurants nearby and ended up at the Burmese Kitchen on Larkin. Yummy!
